Latitude &Longitude Terms
Key Terms:
Circle- A round plane figure whose boundary (the circumference) consists of points equidistant from a fixed center.
Circumference- The perimeter of a circle
Diameter- A straight line going through the center of a circle connecting two points on the circumference.
Radius- A straight line drawn from the center to the extreme edge of a circle
Parallel- Lines, planes, surfaces, or objects side by side and having the same distance continuously between them.
Directions- North, South, East, West
Hemisphere- Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western
Parallel of Latitude- Imaginary lines around the Earth parallel to the equator.
Meridian of Longitude- Longitude is the angular distance of a point's meridian from the Prime Meridian.
Pole- There are two poles on our planet; the North Pole and the South Pole.
Reference Lines-Longitude and Latitude lines
Primary Reference Lines-Major lines such as the Equator.
Location- A particular place or position.
International Dateline- An imaginary line on the surface of the earth following (approximately) the 180th meridian.
